London City Airport transfers: the business traveller's guide

City Airport is small, close and fast, which is exactly why people use it. How the transfer options compare when you are heading to Canary Wharf, the City or a meeting with a hard start time.
London City exists for one kind of traveller: someone who wants to be in a meeting forty minutes after the wheels touch down. The airport is built for that. The question is whether the last mile is.
Why City is different
It is tiny. One terminal, short walks, quick baggage. Landing to kerbside can be fifteen minutes. It sits in the Docklands, a few miles east of Canary Wharf and about seven from the City. There is no motorway between you and where you are going, just London roads.
The DLR
The Docklands Light Railway has a station at the terminal. It is cheap, frequent and genuinely good for Canary Wharf, which is a short ride with one change. For the City and beyond it takes longer than the map suggests, with changes at busy interchanges. For a solo traveller with a laptop bag and a flexible morning, it is the right answer.
A pre-booked car
The case for a car from City is not luggage, since most people flying through here have little. It is time certainty. A driver waiting at the terminal, who already has your destination, means you walk out and sit down. Canary Wharf is often under fifteen minutes. The City is twenty to thirty depending on the hour. Mayfair or Westminster is more like forty in traffic.
The fixed fare matters here in a specific way: on a short journey in variable traffic, a metered ride can vary a lot as a proportion of the fare. A fixed price does not.
The morning peak
City's first arrivals land into London's rush hour. If your meeting is at 9, a 7.45 arrival is comfortable by car to Canary Wharf and tight by car to the West End. Know which you are doing before you book the flight, not after you land.
Return journeys
Evening departures from City are the reverse problem: leaving the City at 5.30pm for a 7pm flight is fine by car in the direction of the airport, since you are going against the flow. Book the return leg with the outbound and the driver for the way back is confirmed before you fly out.

Solo, hand luggage, Canary Wharf, no hard deadline: take the DLR. Anything with a client, a deadline, a second person or a case that needs to go in a boot: pre-book, give the flight number, and spend the fifteen minutes reading your notes instead of the departure board.
